Written by a group of experts specialized in conservation in Central Africa, the 2020 edition of the "State of Protected Areas in Central Africa" follows a first version published in 2015, which has now become the flagship publication on protected areas in the region.
This 2020 edition, coordinated by three scientific editors from CIRAD and OFAC-COMIFAC, was written by a total of fifty authors from Central Africa and elsewhere. It paints a harmonized picture of the protected area network in the whole region.
The report shows, that the national networks and the sub-regional network have been greatly strengthened but that they face many challenges. Detailed analyses, intended to enlighten decision makers and managers, explore several important themes: governance, ecotourism, human-elephant conflicts, transhumance, mining and oil industry.
This document shows the importance of protected areas for the sustainable development of Central Africa: it aims to contribute to a multisectoral dialogue and a better integration of these areas in the development strategies of the countries.
As a reminder, OFAC, a technical body of COMIFAC, began developing databases in 2015 to identify experts, projects and training related to the environment, sustainable exploitation and management of forest ecosystems and biodiversity conservation in Central Africa.
