The 2021 State of the Congo Basin Forests report is available

This report is the seventh published since 2005. It is divided into thirteen chapters, grouped into four parts:

1. Central African Forests: Resource State and Management: This first part provides an effective assessment of the state of forest resources in the Congo Basin, which is increasingly recognized worldwide as one of the planet’s essential "green lungs" for carbon sequestration and biodiversity conservation.
2. Congo Basin forests in international debates: This second part presents the place of the Congo Basin forests on the international scene and in international discussions.
3. Emerging themes for Central African forests
4. Issues and challenges for the forests of the Congo Basin: This fourth and final part focuses on land use planning, landscape restoration and the rights of local populations.

The objective of this report is to identify the main obstacles to sustainable forest management in order to make it an increasingly effective lever for improving the livelihoods and living conditions of local populations and indigenous peoples. As Hervé Maidou, Executive Secretary of COMIFAC, points out, "this report is a repository of tangible data on the forests of the Congo Basin, and aims to help decision-makers in the Central African States in their decision-making on forest management.”

This report was made possible thanks to the participation of 152 authors from research institutions, international organizations, civil society and public administrations. This report is published by the Central African Forest Commission (COMIFAC) through its technical body, the Central Africa Forest Observatory (OFAC), with the support of the European Union through the Strengthening and Institutionalization of the Central African Forest Observatory (RIOFAC) project.
