The BIO4Africa project aims to deploy the bioeconomy in rural Africa through the development of solutions and value chains from residual biomass according to the principle of the circular approach to stimulate the cascading use of local resources and diversify farmers' income.
The objective of this project is to transfer simple, small-scale and robust technologies adapted to local biomass, needs and contexts, including green biorefinery, pyrolysis, hydrothermal carbonization, briquetting, pelletization, bio-composites and bioplastics production.
Bio4Africa is expected to help empower African farmers to sustainably produce a variety of high-value products and energy from residual biomass, including animal feed, fertilizers, pollutant absorbents, building materials, packaging, solid cooking fuels, and ingredients for biogas production. The purpose of these productions is to contribute to improve the environment and the economic and social performance of their forage systems.
BIO4AFRICA is a European project that has officially started after a kick-off meeting was held on June 22 and 23. The CIRAD BioWooEB research unit is the coordinator. The project has received funding from the European Union's Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme and involves a total of 13 European and 12 African organizations from 12 countries.
