Essia is a medium-sized tropical tree: it can reach 30 m in height and 1.5 m in diameter. Its trunk is most often cylindrical, more rarely tortuous with buttresses, covered with a gray bark marked with large vertical crevices. Its fibrous edge, yellowish white, gives off a strong odour of sweet potato. Its flowers are white-green and red leaves are often found on the ground.
When the wood does not have special aesthetic characteristics, it is mainly used for the construction of heavy frameworks or vehicle or container bottoms.
Mottled, striated, veined or moiré woods are sought after in decorative sliced veneers.
Tropical species Essia is found in West Africa, from Guinea to Côte d'Ivoire, as well as over a wide area in Central Africa, from Nigeria in the north, Angola in the south, and the DRC in the east.
Essia is a tropical deciduous species. It is found mainly in dense semi-deciduous rainforests, more rarely in evergreen forests. The winged fruits are dispersed by the wind from February to March.
