Canarium schweinfurthii
Family: BURSERACEAE (angiosperme)
Commercial restrictions: no commercial restriction
Aiele grows in the forests of West Africa and Central Africa, reaching 50 m in height and 2 m in diameter. The bole is straight, grey, with buttresses at the base. It is covered with cracks and scales, and its edge exudes a resinous liquid characterized by an incense smell.
Aiele is a very soft and light wood, not durable, to be reserved for indoor use without dampness. As the sapwood is not clearly distinct, it is necessary to treat the timber against dry wood borers.
Its good peeling ability allows it to be used for the manufacture of plywood, especially as a substitute for okoumé.
It is mainly used for:
Structures and panels
Carpentry and interior fittings
Miscellaneous uses
Aiele is found in a vast area of distribution in West and Central Africa, from Senegal in the north to Angola in the south, and to Tanzania in the east.
Aiele grows in evergreen and semi-deciduous forests. Seeds are dispersed by animals from November to January - they may be dormant in the soil and germinate in the light.
