Miscellaneous uses
As tropical timber is naturally resistant to damage and decay, while also beautiful and ecologically sound, it is the logical choice for manufacture of top-end products.
Such use can also involve species which are themselves considered precious or semi-precious, adding to product value.
Miscellaneous uses include:
- Barrel and vat making
- Turnery, cutlery and brushmaking
- Tool handles
- Musical instruments
- Sculptures
- Packing and crating
The timber’s appearance is the main selection criteria. Timber species with a high degree of stability are easier to use, although this property is not essential (valuable species such as Ebony and Rosewood are often difficult to use and not very stable). The timber must also not be too heavy and make the end product difficult to handle.
